First 600 mile service. Valve adjustment????
I got my 08 CBR600RR two weeks ago and am about ready to do the first 600 mile service. The sales rep said if I came back they would do the service for 160 bucks and said it included valve adjustment, oil change ect ect. I have read that valve adjustment is not necessary and also read that it is. I can change the oil, check my fluids, adjust the chain and check bolts myself. But if a valve adjustment is necessary i'll spend the 160 bucks. Should I skip the dealership or play it safe?

Unfortunately, it is.
I had a shop with my brother and we made a point in showing the customer what was going on and what has been done with proof whenever possible. But the sad truth is that not everybody is like me and my brother.
If you trust him, go for it, although it is not necessary, in my opinion.
If you really trust and like his job, give him all your business and stick with him for as long as you can. Spread the word too cuz' good, honest and knowledgeable mechs are really hard to come by...

I think I'm going to do the service myself, the salesman told me they would adjust the valves, I called the service department and asked what they would do and they said they dont adjust valves at 600 miles. I'm just going to change the oil with Honda spec oil and filter and check the bolts.

yea i was gunna say they dont adjust valves that soon, you gotta put some good miles on that bike before it needs a valve adjustment. but a thing that i'll do if i ever take my bike in for engine work or somethin like that for service i'll take some black gasket maker and put a little bit on the seal between 2 pieces i know they'll have to take off to check or service the part. then when i get the bike back i'll know whether or not they actually took it apart cause that gasket maker will be cracked in half that i put on, just a little piece of mind thing i do.

Get a service manual, follow the recommended maintenance intervals.
Weirdly enough - I just pulled out my service manual for my F2, and it states that in the *Initial 600 miles* should:
Check Valve clearances
Oil & Filter
Carb Idle speed (older bike)
drive chain adjustment
brake system
clutch adjustment
steering head play
all nuts/bolts for tightness.
Then it doesn't specify checking valves again until the 16,000 mile mark.
Personally - I think it's a bit of overkill to do @ 600 - I think they're trying to check for an assembly/manufacturing tolerance out of spec.
Hell - they might just be talking about putting a mechanic's stethoscope on the head and listeninf for anything that sounds like it's tapping too much or not enough.
