Default Exhaust heat shield, do I need it?

I just installed my Ti Akra slip on last night (lightly used off ebay, $400!) and the factory heat shield under the tail looks like crap. Do I really need to keep it? How about trimming it so you can't see it, or how about using some of that metallic/foil type adhesive heat shield tape stuff on the undertail?

How many of you guys are running pipes with out the heat shield and has it caused any problems?

btw, its a 2004 cbr1000rr.

Did you put anything else under there for protection, or just a la natural?

I did away with the original heatsheild too, when i installed the RS5 it came with a stick on one that you cut to size and use. I did use this and didn`t notice any difference in heat from under there.

I trimmed mine down so it looks factory. With in installed over the new pipe I took a sharpie and drew lines where I wanted to cut then I removed the shield trimmed it then replaced it. It looks great.

That is exactly what I was going to do, hell, if I had a 4" angle grinder I'd do it like the Tuttles! I have some metal shears though that will probably work much better.

I used metal shears and a bench grinder to smooth the edges.

I trimmed it up nice and neat and painted it flat black with some high temp engine paint. Looks great, or should I say, you can't even see it!
