Hi, first post here. After asking a few mechanics around the town, i decided to post a video and see what you might say about this cold engine noise. Its 1996 Honda CBR F3 600 (no money for newer ss) You can hear it at 16-17s, 21-22s, especially after 27s. The noise decreases when the engine gets warm, but its still there.
I have to wait about 2 weeks because everyone is too busy to check the engine and see whats wrong. Some say timing chain , some say its the tensioner, others say "naaah its Honda, they sound like that, dont worry" ... yeah sure...
Any ideas? This noise really scares me i makes me avoid riding my CBR, and i bought it before 1 week. The engine oil looks good.
I can't hear it well but it sounds like your cam chain.
Also, when you rev it, it doesn't sound as smooth as it should. Since it's new to you, a good carb cleaning and balance wouldn't hurt things.
I talked with a mechanic from another city, who had few F3s through the years and gave me some ideas. Because the seller wasn't clear about how much time passed since he changed the engine oil, that mechanic asked me to change the oil now, but first to put some engine cleaning additive to the old oil, let the engine run with it for 10 to 15 minutes and then change the oil and the oil filter. He told me to filter the old oil to see if there are any raspings that might indicate eventual component damage.
He also asked me to look around the area where the exhaust manifold contacts / steps on the engine block - if there is any soot. Also to check for a hole in the pipes near the engine block - if there is a hole, that noise will be caused by the valve(s) located near the exhaust manifold. He thinks it's more likely to be a valve noise, not a cam chain.
So tomorrow when i change the engine oil i will check that area and will let you know what's going on.
I hope this info will be useful for anybody experiencing similar engine noises.
One of the best motorcycle mechanics in my town will have free time on Friday, definately going to check the cam chain, just in case.
So I changed the Oil filter and the engine oil (7100 full synthetic) - no improvement regarding the noise. I also filtered the old oil but it was completely clean, no soot or anything left in the strainer. I won't ride it for now. On tuesday one of the best mechanics in the city will take my CBR and see what's wrong. Good thing his garage is like 3 minutes away from home (walking) so i plan to push the bike instead of riding it... just in case. So hopefully next week my CBR will be up and running, i will post an update as soon as i get info from the mechanic.
The mechanic called me:
- the chain tensioner is in good condition, but ...
- the cam chain is bad and must be replaced
- the valves need adjustment, since their values are too low, almost out of the recommended range
But he thinks there might be something else, because these things should create noises after the engine gets warm. In my case, the noises appear when cold and decrease when the engine gets warm.
More info by the end of this week, Thursday or Friday.
Quoting my mechanic: "Your CBR is ready. Now it sounds quiet and smooth, just as any Honda should be." So that's it - these awful noises that appeared on cold engine and kinda decreased when it's warmed up, they were caused by bad cam chain and poor valve values, almost out of the recommended range. After replacing the cam chain and adjusting the valves, my CBR is back on the road
