Default Bike stalls and dies

So I think the carbs need to be cleaned, but I wanted to see if anyone agrees or thinks it might be something else. So first off it is a 1980 honda xl250s. Yes there is gas in the tank and the spark plug is brand new. What happens is when riding, not very far, the bike will stall then die. Other times it will all of a sudden rev really high without me twisting the throttle. Also when trying to restart it will sputter start but die really quickly. But it will eventually start again. So what do you guys think?
