Default Battery Charger Question

I recently bought a black and decker 1-2amp charger for my motorcycle battery. It says it has a float charge thinger. Does that mean i can wire it thru the rear seat and every time i bring the bike in i can toss the charger on it to preserve battery life? Or would this cause more harm than good, especialy if its cold? Also, could I use this to store the battery over the winter months ahead by leaving it on and letting it "charge" the battery?

You don't want to just keep it on charge. Not sure about the "float charge" deal, call their 800 # on that for clarity.
I just run my bike to temp every week or so when it's too wet/snowy out to ride to keep my battery up.

Default RE: Battery Charger Question

I have a battery tender on mine, and I let mine sit all winter. If the weather was nice enough to ride, I would plug in the tender the day before and its just fine. But leaving it plugged in all the time isn't good. And not to mention, it will jack up your electric bill too.

I've never put a tender on my batteries, and i've never had to buy one in 13 years.

Default RE: Battery Charger Question

I know I am going against everyone on the site but I have one on my goldwing and I keep it on all the time durring the winter when not ridding. In the summer I do not plug it in because I am ridding everyday. NOw I know the Wing pulls powers all the time to run the clock, alarmand other items on the wing, andyour bike does not.

It is my understanding that smart chargers (like the battery tenders) will only apply charge when needed. I cannot see where it will be any danger to the life of the battery as long as the tender is functioning properly.
