RE: M.C. Design ? Why not put carbs in front...
Most Sportbikes are fuel injected these days. But putting the carbs in the direct front of the engine would push too much air into the engine, which would be harder to control for carbureutors. Not to mention those who live in areas where dirty air could clog up your jets. As for the exhaust there must have a specific length for your equilibrium of pressure of internal pressure vs. external pressure. Engineers have spent millions of dollars and countless hours in designing the sportbike, there must be some reason why they did what they did, thas my opinion on this.

Interesting... Smooth air box runners/ short radius, front wheel clearence, heat around exaust ports/ exaust syastem. exaust length/ underseat heat, Coolers,Oil/ water repositon from front. Back in the day... some drag racers "swaped 'em. LOTS of enginering involved. Take a look at one of my favorite sites... TULARIS racing. He built some sick and twisted stuff, w/ intakes forward. It realy takes thinking outside the box. Good Question !!!!!!!!!!

The ram air sealed air box allows a constant or more consistant level of charged air into the carbs. mounting them in the front would make it impossible to regulate their performance at slow speeds and high speeds when the pressure is greater. great fro one or the other but not both.

Your right, highmileage. You would need to contend with things like front wheel, fender, fairings, etc. to give each cylinder the same amount of air pressure. Then you would need to sheild everything from the rain, so the intakes wouldn't ingest water. So it really works out better where it is.
