Default Starting Issue

Desperate for some guidance.

New today and I'm hoping this forum will be more helpful than Facebook groups.

My friend has a 1998 CBR 600 F3

It was running fine and everything worked as it should when purchased in 2021, it was used August 2022 for a charity ride which it performed faultless for.

It then sat up until 2 weeks ago when it was pulled from it's resting place, the battery was knackered but we tried to start it with battery pack and the button did nothing, except for an indicator everything worked perfectly.

I ordered a new battery and fitted that, still nothing on the button.

Tried connecting the 2 terminals on top of starter relay and starter motor kicked into life.

Tried cleaning the terminals and checking all the wires from the button but the bike is in a car park and I'm not really able to strip it down where it is.

I then replaced the starter relay on recommendation of a local bike shop, that came today so i fitted that with the new indicators and tried to start it but still nothing on the button, i tried connecting the red and yellow wire from the starter button at the starter relay end to ground to see if that worked bypassing the button and that didnt do anything either.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue and knew what to do to fix it.

Please do throw suggestions at me if you have any.

Also does this bike make any noise when you turn the ignition on, fuel pump noise? Anything at all?

It makes a thudding type noise at the front by the clocks but no other noises and even when pressing the start button it does absolutely nothing at all, no clicks nothing.

Thank you in advance.

Hey there. First to answer your question. The fuel pump doesn't engage until the bike is running. You will not hear anything while attempting to start the bike. That is normal.

Some basic questions. Is the bike in neutral when you try to start it?
Have you tried starting it with the kickstand up?

Hi 👋🏻
I have checked the kickstand switch, I've tried starting with the stand up and down in neutral, in gear out of gear it just does nothing.

And thank you for the info on the pump, I wasn't sure if it was supposed to make a noise or not.

I wouldn't spend any more money on parts until you have a better idea of what the issue is.
More than likely the issue is related to sitting and there is corrosion, or something is gummed up somewhere.
If your instrument cluster lights up at least you know the ignition switch is doing something.
And if the bike turns over when the starter is jumped, you know that is good.
The 1st thing I would do is download a copy of the service manual which is in the f3 forum on this site.
After that, it's a matter of tracing down where the gremlin is. If you don't have one, I suggest buying a multimeter. It doesn't need to be fancy or expensive. A basic one will do.
After you take a look at the manual and have questions, fire them away. One of us will be glad to lend a hand.
