22K miles. 1989 Honda CBR 600 (Hurricane). Nothings changed since my last ride but these symptoms have suddenly arisen :
Fuel pump is very loud. I've never recalled hearing it this loud before. The noise is "clicking", but it is clearly audible while riding, even at higher speeds and with all the plastic fairings secured. Again, I've never heard it this loud before.
The bike hesitates on acceleration. "Spits and sputters" if you will. For example, I could give it a steady 1/2 throttle pull and the bike simply won't go. It's as if the gas is being cut off for brief seconds at a time, hense why I suspect the pump.
Likely unrelated, but sometimes I'll press the button to start, and I'll only hear the relay click, no starter spin. Then I'll try again and it'll start perfectly fine, relay clicks, starter spins, and engine starts. Failing starter or relay?
I have yet to perform the tests listed in the Clymer manual however. Both are OEM original.
Thanks everyone. These symptoms are new to me and I feel as though they're simple (hopefully.
PS, I have a short mp4 video of the bike running with camera next to the fuel pump if anyone would like to see it. I can send via email

I had to replace my fuel pump and the new one is LOUD. I never had the OEM a pump running so I don’t know how loud it would have been. Pretty sure it will be audible on the road.

Thanks for your reply. So today I eliminated the fuel pump and replummed the fuel lines. Took it out for a short ride and symptoms of hesitation in acceleration still persist. I can't for the life of me figure this out. I didn't do anything differently prior to these symptoms arising. All vacuum lines appear fine. One thing I Did notice however, was one of the two vacuum valves was kinda stuck. Musta been this way for a while though. So I removed these hoses and freed up the valve. Issue still persists. So it must not be this. Also, I understand this vacuum system to not be necessary and was only required on some models (California models?)

I've got the same issue with one of mine, fuel pump clicks and bike hesitates and is down on power. Very misfirey.

You have a Hurricane? So I went ahead and ordered a new Genuine Honda fuel pump and plan on installing it this week. Fingers crossed this solves my issue. I just can't see any other possible causes. Especially considering it's gotten noticeably louder over the past few months.
There is a fuel pump test explained in the Clymer manual which I've done. My results were inconclusive however. It involves using a jumper wire on the pump relay to force the pump on when key is turned. You measure the volume output into a granulated beaker for 5 seconds.

Mine are UK bikes so not called hurricane but they are the same, 1989
Let me know if it helps. The fact my fuel pump is clicking makes me think its the culprit, but it could easily be a carb or spark issue causing the misfire and hesitation.

New Genuine Honda (Mitsubishi) fuel pump. It's definitely more quiet than my original pump, so there's that. BUT, my issue still persists. Bike idles perfectly and any blip of the throttle while bike is stationary is fine. It's only when riding the issue is present. Doesn't seem to be RPM sensitive or throttle position sensitive. Happens at 4k RPM's or 7K RPM's. Seems most previlent on light and steady accelerations. Full throttle is fine apparently. Best I can describe it is "sputtering, bucking, and hesitating on acceleration". Never did this before until now and I've done nothing different with or to the bike. 22K well cared for miles. Always ran like a top, until recently. I tore the carb apart and everything was spotless! No debris in the bowls. I cleaned (as a precaution) all jet openings. Air filter is spotless. New fuel filter. Does this sound like a vacuum issue? Spark? Fuel? I'm almost certain it's not fuel at this point based on the new pump, filter, and I replaced the petcock 2 years ago. Can't be vacuum right? I mean if it idles and revs up perfectly, could it really be vacuum? That leaves spark. Plugs are NGK and are only 2 years old. Could it be the spark module? I forgot it's actual name. I'm totally lost here. Especially considering this issue arose without warning and without me having done any work to the bike in over 2 years. It's been great to me overall!

Im troubleshooting a similar issue, at the moment I think its my ht leads. They aren't fitting all the way in, I think as they've got older they've expanded. The symptoms I'm having sound very similar so I'll let you know if I solve it.

Your plug wires? Interesting. Mine are original. I haven't considered this as a possible culprit. I'd be very interested to know if you replace them, if your issue is resolved. My only concern with my bike is the intermittence of my issue. I'd think if plug wires were to blame, wouldnt you notice it more often? Like even when the bikes idling?
