what oil and oil filter?

This is what I use to take the oil filter out, works great. And also, if your bike was serviced by the dealership, they torque the oil filter to spec which is like 25-30 ft/lb (don't quote me on the exact spec but I know it's way up there).
Adam,
That's the kind of wrench that I tried, but I guess I didn't try hard enough. I couldn't even get it positioned on the filter between the manifold. I'll give it another shot.
Vangill,
Thanks for the ideas. I think the previous owner thought things weren't tight enough if it was still humanly possible to remove it. I did my oil change a couple weeks ago and the drain plug felt just about as tight, except that I could actually get some leverage on it. The old oil looked clean enough, so I figured at that point I'd leave the filter on and deal with it later.

Living in Illinois, we have some colder springs/falls, however I'm curious as to when I do my mid season change, if I should change oils. I run 10w-50 now, however I don't think I want it that thin @ temp (because of sludge buildup). While I am running full synthetic, I was thinking about just dropping it down to 10w-40 for the summer, and when I change it at the end of the season, putting in 15w-40.
As far as a FAQ section, that's what the stickies are for. People just need to learn to stop asking what oil is "best" like there is a magical go fast one. And need to ask more questions like mine (notice how I didn't include a brand) about oil viscosity and things like that.

i agree with you zero, but i think by "best" people 'usually' mean best for their area and mileage..
i know for where i live (hot yr-round) and the mileage i have (under 3k) i need part synthetic at most and 10w-40 is just fine..i fill cars up all day, best stickie for this would be a graph to see which oil is best for your bike by taking into account area temp and mileage.

Just for info - diesel oil is better for most bikes than car oils due to the lubricity improvers in car oils which make our clutches slip, and other additives like sulphur, etc.
Plenty of info available - send me a PM and I'll point you to it.....
