Weird (electrical)
New to me 03 F4i. I've been working though the issues left for me by the previous owner.
I had a good experience yesterday...and a bad one... First, the good: My FI light was blinking, with some help from the forum I suspected the MAP sensor....I tried re-setting the ECU faults. Cleaned the connections, etc. I have no manual, but I do have it downloaded now. Anyhow, as I was about to give up and go order another MAP sensor, I had the brainstorm that the little hole in the bottom might actually want a hose on it...Looked around behind the motor and sure enough, I found a hose. Stuck that on the map sensor and it works! No FI light.
So I took the bike out for it's first real test ride. Did almost a tank of gas, then stopped to rest my butt. Tried to restart and the bike's battery was almost dead sounding...about 1 revolution and then "click click"...The dash even reset itself, no juice at all. The bike was pretty hot, having just done some twisty canyon riding.
Now the weird....I bump-started the bike and rode 25 miles home. Now the battery is fully charged again....and this is after an overnight, so the battery seems to be OK...
So why would about 175 miles of riding give me a dead battery/ no juice? And then 25 more miles after a bumpstart charge the battery back up? Weird. anyone want to guess why this might have happened? thanks,
Don Hanson
Starter problem maybe?
Oh, and my second gear still sucks.

If the gagues lost power as well thats in indicator of lost power. Im assuming your charging system is working due to the fact that you said it charged up on the way home, although the r/r could be bad it gets pretty hot and could have stopped working maybe? I would get your battery load tested and check voltage and your charging system then go from there. The r/r is normally an easy check if you just look at the back of itll be rippled all the way across it from overheating(sometimes).
Ok, I'd planned on cleaning and tightening all the electrical connections as one of my next chores..I know on my last Honda (VFR) the connections were really picky about being clean. I was just wondering it there was perhaps some "F4i-specific" issue, like the chain tensioner on the F2s and the RR blowing up on the older VFRs...
It did sort of behave like a poor connection now that I recall it's activity..I will say, bump starting the F4 is one heck of a lot easier than trying to bump the VFR......amazing what a couple hundred lbs less weight will do for you when pushing....or riding, for that matter.
Thanks all. Dopn Hanson
