Default Valve adjustment

Hi guys,

I'm doing my first valve check on my 01 F4i and I noticed that most valves and at the maximum spec on the loose side. One intake valve is slighly over. Now, don't valves tighten as the engine wears on "shim-under-bucket" valve trains? I'm just debating whether I should take my cam off just to adjust one valve which is out of spec.....

Thank you!

PS: The bike has about 32,000km on it (19,600 mi)

If there all borderline then adjust all of em, you gotta take the cams off and what not to do it.

Yeah I guess I could....but my question is if the valves get tighter as they wear....if yes,I'd rather keep everything the way it is since they will automatically adjust wear themselves tighter....

It depends on how much they are off. You can actually sand down your shims if needed with some wet sanding.

It's my understanding that the valves in normal operation would tighten, which is why you check them. With loose valves however, you may get excessive leakage whichserves tohurting performance, mileage, etc.

Check your cam lobes, keep in mind they wear as well. Also take note of how the bike runs. If it isn't idling rough or "pinging" I really wouldn't worry too much about it. Sync your throttle bodies and be done with it. Check your plugs as well. An off coloured plug can give you an indication if one cylinder isn't working quite the same as the others.

Sanding your hardened steel shims would be a lot more headache than just going to your honda dealer and purchasing the right ones.

Thanks for the replies guys. I acutally had the wrong specs. 3 of my valves are a bit tight. This makes a heck of a lot more sense. I ordered a shim kit today and will fix the valves as soon as I get the kit.....
