Yea if you wanted to clean your tail up without buying a undertail this is really the only option. Without a undertail your lock will have no place to mount, and there will be a very large hole in the back of your storage compartment. So I wouldn't recommend hacking anything off, I would just trim off the bottom of the fender. Mine originally had the license plate mounted right below the lock, and everything behind it was cut.

 

I cut a piece of mud flap to hide the hole and then just cut a hole in the bottom of the storage comp. to put the lock, works well. Mounted the plate right under the tail light with some kit that came off my old undertail.
