Strong smell of raw Gas/fuel
Hi, I’ve got a 2002 CBR600F4i, I had a small leak and the engine was flooded and the gas started coming out of a tiny hole at ye bottom of the exhaust header. The guy I bought it off, a bike mechanic by trade suspected a faulty FPR valve (which is what I bought to) and replaced it saying the diaphragm split. It only had 1 owner from new and 9K miles on it. There’s no leak now and has been running fine and starting well but it absolutely stinks of raw GAS when sat in the garage, so much so it’s penetrating the house making the wife angry, and worrying me with the fumes having kids around. I’ve been leaving it outside in the day to vent! What can it be? I’ve checked around the filler cap, no leaks or smell from the vent tubes it seems to be coming from down in the gap in the front of the tank behind where he engine is (if you were to place your chin on the top of he tank close up to the instrument cluster) I’m not a mechanic and brand new to biking. I thought I’d learn as I go with the Haynes manuals but without the tools or time this needs to be sorted quickly, the garages seem to have wait times in weeks to look at it. I worked out the initially problem with the FPR valve through the forums but can’t work out why if the talks not leaking where he raw smell can be coming from.
Greetings & Salutations!
Entire EFI system should be sealed with tiny air-vent for tank pressure equalisation. Everything after that should be sealed.
Easy quick test is to get some fluorescent dye that you can pour into tank. Run bike around for 5-min. Then use UV LED flashlight to see where fresh petrol is leaking out of system. Best bet is to take apart entire EFI system from tank to exhaust and inspect every single joint. Hoses, banjo-bolts and crush-washers. Injector body-seams, fuel-rail O-rings, etc. Mechanic could've been lazy and not even replaced crush-washers and just hand-tightened banjo-bolts.
Try to get factory manual, so much better than Haynes.
Personally, I haven't used garages in over 30-yrs. Way, way too many bad experiences with incompetent "mechanics", who shouldn't even be working on bicycles!
