Default Smell of gas

Hey,

my bike smells of gas when I stop it when it is hot.
There is no visible gas leaks anywhere.

The overflow hoses are dry, exept for the one from the fuel tank.
It is wet even with only 4 litres of gas in the tank.

any ideas?

regards

Thomas

My first guess would be the seal on the gas cap. If it is not working correctly, gas would splash up and exit out the over flow line on the tank. On hot days, vapors would do the same.

Those other lines on the carbs are drain lines for when you drain the bowls.

Don't know if it would show up that way but mine had a very slow leak at the "O" ring seals on the valve flange where it and the spacer mate to the tank. For a few months I thought I could smell gas in my garage but never saw anything under the bike nor any evidence of trouble. The leak was so slow, it would evaporate as it ran down the frame. It wasn't until I had the plastic off that I discovered it.

I went threw the very same problem, but found it. As said "check the gas cap seal" My bike would smell so bad my wife could smell it in the house. Picked up a new seal and the smell went away.

Yes. And petcock is the proper word when discussing motorcycles, not valve. Sorry.

We all got the idea. I managed to brake the screw off that holds the round twist handle to my petcock. Damn, it's always something.

On my bike it was the o-ring seal leaking between the bottom cover of the carbs and the carbs.
