RE: So...First ticket on the bike
I'm not sure what state you are from but here in Florida you'll have three options.
1. Pay the violation and points would be added to your license. >15 mph over would be 3 points and <15 mph would be 4 points. This may cause your insurance rates to got up especially for 15 +.
2. Elect a court date. Here in Florida people sometimes use this option to plea no contest and have adjudication withheld meaning not saying their guilty and no points are placed on their license. Most of the judges here are cool and allow this as long as you do not have a real bad record. There may be court costs added to the fine amount with this option. People can also elect to fight the violation in frtont of a Judge.
3. Elect a traffic school. It's sometimes called defensive driving here in Florida. This is a 4 hour course, depending on your history maybe 8 hours, that keeps the points off of your license and your insurance rates can not increase. Also 18 % comes off of the fine amount. Here in Florida the schools are available on-line, can be rented on DVD or VHS, or can be attended in a classroom environment. Also here in Florida if you are cited and take this class that you will maintain a safe driver status if you have one already.
