smell will not tell you if its running rich or lean.."smelling" rich is usually running lean.
Gas mileage,all depends on how up check it(same station ,same spot when you fill up etc)..
Ticking -very possible its the cam tensioner(esp if you hear it in the 4500-6500 range more ),mine started ticking at 5k miles.installed a new one and not a issue since.
