Default Passenger peg disassembly and assembly

So I made a bad judgment call by disassembling my passenger foot pegs (wanted to paint them). Has anyone ever put them back together successfully?

The only hard part is keeping the tiny metal ball/spring in place so it locks in position.

Put the spring in the hole, put the ball in the hole and hold it in place with the metal plate, force the whole lot into the gap on the hanger. Are you putting the plate in the right way round?

I found it VERY simple, you must have some parts the wrong way round or something, it really was simple.
