Default Low Idle startup then increases to normal

From all the threads i could find, it seems as though the bike is supposed to start at a higher idle speed and then drop down to the 1300 range. My bike starts off at barely 1000 and once it gets to >100 degrees it slowly increases to 1300. If i ride it before it gets to that point, it sounds like garbage, the exhaust is quite and the engine sounds whiney. But when i let it warm up to the right idle point, it sounds great.

BTW, i have a 2003 f4i, no power commander, get about 32-35 mpg and just got my plugs done.

Any thoughts?

hmm sounds like it just needs a tune up or something. I would just have it checked out it could be as little as a pinched fuel line or something but Im not sure whats wrong exactly.

funny you should say that. I did have a pinched fuel line that was fixed when i got it back from the shop last week. So I don't think its that. When they were doing my plugs they did my shims as well. I had starting problems and now its starting up fine, just has a bad idle when not warmed up.

Use the factory service manual to pull codes. Go from there.

How did it run before they did the shims? If the shims are too thick making the valves tight it will do just that. Also it could just need synching or the wax assembly which is what does the choke.

jonld came with what I was going to say. If the valves arent the problem and everything else is in order then maybe your "fast idle wax unit" is shot. When the bike is cold the wax is solid, holding open the throttle bodies just a tad more than idle, keeping the rpms up. When the wax melts the unit retracts slightly and allows the engine to idle at its usual rpm.

The unit works off of the coolant, it has two hoses that run through it. So if the wax unit is fine you may have a issue with your cooling system.
