idle at startup
The past few days when i go to start my bike cold, it revs up to around 2500-3000 rpm. It only lasts for a few minutes, but this doesnt sound normal. It does rest around 1200 once warmed up...but does anyone elses go that high at first startup?
Idle speed should be 1300 RPM +/- 100 RPM when warm. The adjuster is located on the lower left side next to the stator cover. It's a black star looking thing on the end of a cable. Pull out and turn to adjust.
I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts to shoot really high or dosent come down after it's warmed up.

mine use to do that before i installed a pc3 on it, i really don't know why it stopped when i did that but it did, now it idles up maybe a little higher but comes down after about 45 sec's. I have noticed that if i enrich the settings at low rpm's it idles better/smoother. Winter time riding in general i think it's better to run a little more rich, but you really can't adjust this unless you have a pc3.
Recently ran into this problem, my 02 would usually idle at 1200 at first startup. Went to the gym for about an hour came out and started her and idled at 3000, and sounded like the throttle was open, so i tried to roll it back down but it was already closed. Turned her off and restarted her and was fine at 1200. Kinda worried since im new to bikes and wouldn't want it to explode on me or anything XD, any thoughts? Thanks.
Guys it's winter time, it's cold out, it's gonna idle high when it's cold just like every other gasoline engine on the road (diesels don't require a fast idle.... they go right to their normal idle when started cold). Exact same way your car does when it's cold. It does it to help warm the motor up faster, and keep it running smooth. If it didn't run rich when cold it would stall out or run like crap.
It will fast idle at different speeds depending on how cold it is. If not just kinda cool/mildly cold it'll fast idle at usually 2000-2200 or so. When it's really cold (below freezing) it'll go up to 2500-3000 or so. Completely normal, don't worry about it... just let it run and warm up for a few minutes (like you should anyways) and it'll drop right back down to normal idle
And yes a PCIII can have some effect on the cold idle
