Second day riding my newly purchased 04 and the instrument cluster and tail/brake lamp stops working while riding on highway. Instrument cluster reads zero rpm and not lit from what I can see, friend told me tail lights are out.

Fuse? Some type of common connection broke? where should I start first? Mechanically inclined but new to bikes.

Check the connector blocks - they sometimes work loose
You'll probably find them near the rear of your instrument panel or in the right side front.

Tail lamp could just be a bulb..................

 

Start by checking the fuse. There is a 10a fuse that is common to those circuits.

Sucks that with this gas shortage we're having in the tristate, I can't tell if I'm on reserves.

 

Likely the fuse. Where in the tri-state? If you go down to south Jersey towards Princeton/Hamilton/Trenton area there are no lines at the fuel pumps and they're not even doing the odd/even thing.

 

It was the fuse. Fuse is same for tail/instrument.

I'm in NYC area. I heard but I hate jersey, I'll probably head to CT instead.
