Default Fork seals

Hi all, and wishes for a very good 2009.

I noticed fork oil smeared on one of the forks and naturally I have blown a seal. Can some one please tell what part numbers I need to order form here? http://fiche.ronayers.com/Index.cfm/...oup/FRONT_FORK

Also, willthe bike be still safe to ride in anticipation of the fix?

Thanks a million.

If you have never done a set of forks I would suggest you go ahead and take them some place to have them done. I can not begin to tell you what a pain in the a$$ it has been for me to have to go in behind guys that say "I do all my own work on the bike but...". It's not as easy as just putting new parts on. If you truly are mechanically inclined you should be able to look at the schematic and know what parts you need. Sorry if that sounds mean or rude. As a bike mechanic it sometimes gets very frustrating when I have to clean up someone elses mess cause they "thought" they could do it. I say leave it the people who are trained to do it. I dont race the bikes I own I let the racers do it and they dont try to work on the bikes they race.

This could work.....if we all made $200k a year.........the reality is, if you want to ride or race or do any kind of motorcycling, you either have to suck it up, and do the work yourself, or have lots of cash, and shell it out for someone to do your work.

That being said, fork seals suck to replace, for just the seals, it looks to be part 16 for the seals, you may find you need orings, or some bushings as well once you tear into them. I have never done my own forks, but have watched many being done. There is a special tool that will make the job a lot easier, the fork seal tutorials on here talk about it i think.

Its pretty straight forward though.....

Pull the forks
drain fork fluid
tear em down, and replace the parts
rebuild em

that sounds a whole lot easier than it is...

That`s the reason I work on vehicles myself ~ rather keep the cash. That and there`s a certain satisfaction knowing you fixed it yourself.

As long as it`s not a massive leak and you don`t go crazy you should be OK. Also make sure it`s not dripping on your brakes; that could be very bad.On a side note, if you`re going to do one side, you should do both.

Why is this page so freaking huge.

Thanks for all the feedback and posts. I never implied that I wanted to do the job myself; I just needed the part numbers to order to parts. Although I’m mechanically challenged, I figured out that I needed part no. 16 on the schematic, but wasn’t sure.

To travsstuff:

There are two “part no. 16†with different codes, so, for my knowledge, how do you know which one to choose? Thanks a million for the tutorials and links.

I use this site....I believe when I did my F4i they didn't have double part numbers....

If I was you, I would two sets of the fork oil/dust seal combos, two bushings, and two sliders, and two washers... they are number 16, 8, 9 and 19 on your site there....while you may not need all of that...I always do it while I am there to insure I have a a nice tight fork setup. I did it to my F4i and my RR.

Thanks TBF, but since numbers 16, 8 and 9 show twice on the schematic, which ones do I get? Is there a way of knowing how to choose the proper ones? Thanks again for any help guys.

I would go to bike bandit and use that site....that is what I always use...

I forgot the link in the above post...

http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmot...m2050sch103043

16:SEAL SET, FR. FORK ,AC 2AC 122561-001 $17.60
8:BUSH, GUIDE 934291-001 $5.25

9:BUSH, SLIDER 934297-001 $7.36
19:WASHER (10MM) (10MM),A AC 52845-001 $1.62 Get two of each. I replaced my bushings with the seals because, one they cheap enough, and two when the bushings wear out, it will cause pre-mature seal failure. Then your forks won't be as tight which I can only assume will effect their performance. I also replace the washer (#19) because, like the oil drain plug, you are supposed to replace it each time.It is a seal for the fork oil. No, i don't replace my drain plug washer everytime, but for the forks...$3 is some good insurance on a part I won't have to touch for a while.
