Fork Question

I had to do this recently... I had quite the time determining how do accomplish this with the limited tools at hand.
I first got the bike up on regular bike stands.
Then I decided too use two jack stands under the lower engine area (left and right) as well as a straight 1/2" steel pipe holding the front engine (the space between header pipes, the pipe going from floor jack to upper engine area near valve covers). This pipe is for safety so when you remove the front bike stand it cant learch forward. Its a balancing act. For me extra weight on the rear helped balance the bike. I had to have the rear tire on with an extra 20 lbs of weight or so on the tail to prevent any forward leaning motion. When I removed the front bike stand the extra weight helped settle the rear on to the remaining rear bike stand.
I've worked on the bike since then extensively and it seems quite stable.
I'm sure this is the wrong way but It was all I had.
