RE: false nuetrals and notchy shifting
I have to agree. When I'm ridin hard it shifts fine. Take it easy and the transmission seem hesitant. Also, the throw to engage is much further than I am used to from my previous bikes. Unfortunately, I live and ride mostly in the city so I pretty much have to take it easy.

i redline first and 2nd just about everytime and my 05 f4i shifts smooth as hell. I might sound like an idiot lol , but these bikes are meant for one thing and that is racing. I used to shift at 5k rpms when the bike was new and i was breaking it in but nowI cant helpbut riding out every gear if possible.(mostly on the freeway though)

im far from an expert on sequential gearboxes or anything moto related, but isnt what you are decribing, "clunky slow shifts, crisp high rpm shifts", the nature of all sequential gearboxes? BMW's SMG(car)transmissions have the same problem, fun and fast when your gaggin it,clumsy and clunky when trying to drive conservatively.
i noticed on my f4i that it was hard to shift gears slowly and conservatively, the bike didnt want to be smooth, i had to drive it mildly aggressively for it to shift crisp and smooth.

first gear will usually klunk when you shift in at a stop. that's just the way it is.
remove the sprocket cover, rotate the shifter pivot arm 180 and then run reverse shifting...never have missed shifts again...but be very carefuly...accidental downshifts while exiting a turn = very dirty shorts...at least.
