Default Notchy Shifting

The shifting on my bike has started getting notchier. Also the gasket where the shift drum is is leaking badly.

Could a leaky gasket cause notchier shifting by itself? The bike has done 88,000km.

Since I need to replace the gasket is there anything else I should replace while I'm in there? I know factry pro make a stiffer spring, but $80 for a spring and a gasket is fscked! Unfortunately they don't make a detent arm or shift star for this model.

So should I just replace the detent arm, shift star & spring with stock parts or is there someone else who makes them?

Thanks
Rob

Hi,

I had the same problem with my 1990 FL model. Turned out to be a worn bearing in the gear change lever. It is just a simple sleeve around the bolt that holds the lever to the bike - not really a bearing at all! I took the bolt out and cleaned and lubricated all the bearing surfaces. That made it much better. But if, when you take the lever off, you find that there is too much clearance and the lever is rattling around then you'll have to get a new one. Much cheaper and easier than replacing shift drums/stars, so worth a try first.....

Yeah my shifter is quite worn, bot just the bearing, but also the linkage. I have to venture into the guts anyway as its pissing out oil.

Talk about rogered up the *** though. $60 for all the seals and $180 for a replacement shift lever!

Is there some king of aftermarket alternative to the standard lever?

What do you mean by 'all the seals'? There is only the gearbox output shaft seal there. You just have to take the output sprocket off and then the housing and put a new seal in it, then refit.....
