Plenty of people do it, that doesn't change the fact that Honda says not to.

A tiny exhaust leak would create a high-pitched "claping" sound, which seems like what you're describing. You're supposed to have a gasket in between the manifold and engine to prevent leaks, and you need to replace it every time you separate the two. They usually don't come with the kits. I know I had to buy mine separate.

just because 1 person has ran it for 100k miles with no problems doesn't mean i haven't seen quite a few sets of scorched clutch plates because of car oil
