Default CCT Modification - Roll Pin replacement

I was going to post this in a previous thread regarding the CCT Modification but I thought I'd start another thread.

I had originally considered welding the hardened CCT tip to the shaft but there was very little room to perform that as well as there was a possibility of destroying the case hardened properties of the tip. What I did do was the following:

1. removed the exisiting roll pin that secures the tip to the shaft with a pin punch
2. used a centre punch on either side of the roll pin holes on the shaft to displace material thus shrinking the hole diameter
3. replaced the tip using the next size larger roll pin

Because of the roll pin's larger OD I could not drive the roll pin all the way through, so I drove it half way through at which point it began to bend, I then drove a second larger roll pin from the otherside meeting the first roll pin in the middle. The excess roll pin was cut flush from both sides of the shaft. One could use the original roll pin as using a centre punch on either side of both holes on the shaft definately shrinks the hole diameter.

Here are some pics, the last two show the centre punch marks - sorry about the focus:

Default RE: CCT Modification - Roll Pin replacement

why didn't you just flare the existing pin at the ends? has the same outcome and 1/16 the work ;-)

Default RE: CCT Modification - Roll Pin replacement

Doing it this way ensures that the entire depth of the hole is tight on the roll pin, not just the outer edge. Hopefully it should (theoretically) remain tight over a longer time as there is now zero movement in the tip.

As far as time goes it only took 5 minutes worth of work.

I guess only time will tell!
