Default 16000 mile service

My bike just hit 16000 miles. The shop i go to wants 400 to 500 to do the service. I have change the oil and top off fluids: coolant, and brakes. Grease the chain. My ? is concerning the valve clearance check. How hard is it and has any one done it. I have an manual that shows how to do it. A buddy i know who works on honda dirt bikes said he would help me do it. i would just like to know if there are any secrets to doing it to make it easyier please let me know thanks

Default RE: 16000 mile service

400 to 500 is typical for a Honda dealership for this service.

As far as doing it yourself, it could be done. The problem will be is if you actually have to swap shims where you'd then have to order them from a dealer (and hope they have them in stock).

In my area (SF, CA), you can find small independent shops that can do this for much cheaper (~$200). See if you have a similar shop in your area.
