Take bike apart and inspect transmission components.

could stock chain and sprockets cause this? My chain is tight then when I turn tire goes back to normal which leads me to believe that chain is shot.

No the chain won't cause this. Misaligned chain/sprocket may sometimes, but that should affect all gears. Tight spots on a chain is usually due to not lubing it frequently resulting in links dying. Usually on sportsbikes it's the 2nd gear which goes likely because people gun it in 2nd to 'enjoy' the acceleration , wheelies etc. Do you or did previous owner identify as hooligan rider ?

Yes, no other way I am afraid mate. You'd have to drop the motor and poll the transmission out to see what needs to be renewed.
Here. some threads to get you going

Ton of info on this forum itself. These are the kind of jobs which require time and patience but at the same time most financially rewarding as the biggest part of the bill if you get it done in a garage is labour. Easily approaching high $$$. So bring your manual out and get wrenching.

Sounds like your chain is toast, but no this is usually caused by a bad shift fork inside the trans.
