Valve shims

Valve shims
Well, long story short, I had to change the head on my bike. I used a head with good valves that seal properly. It did not come with valve caps and shims. I put the cams in with my old caps a shims and discovered that I had little to negative lash on several valves. I am wondering if anyone has sujestions how to make it easy to figure out what size of shims I need to order for the valves that have negitive lash? I have ordered the hot cams shim kit and am trying to avoid a trial and error process of bolting and unbolting the cams.

If you wait for the shim kit, you can put the smallest ones you have in the worst valves.
Then the second smallest, etc. Re-install the cams and hopefully that will give you
enough gap to measure and determine what you really need. I just don't see
anything else working, without doing the job twice.
