Default Aftermarket Guage cluster hookup

I am helping a friend install an e-bay aftermarket (cheap) gauge cluster unit on an F2. With the tach wire connected to the new unit, the RPM signal shows about double what the actual engine speed is! I am guessing this is because each coil fires TWICE in each power cycle (each coil is responsible for 2 cylinders). I can't find any way to program the gauge unit to compensate for this.... Is there any other way to get the tach to read correctly?

This may sound odd, try setting it for a two cylinder. Apparently others have had success doing this on cf

I put a Suzuki Katana tach on my F2 one time, it seemed to work good until I got to the track, RPM's were pegged. I fixed it when I got home, used it for a year or so, but I dont remember which way was wrong or which way was right. I either had one wire going to a coil or 2 wires going to both coils. I eventually went back to original tach with speedo ground off by the highway. I didnt ground it, I got it dirt cheap.
