Default polishing step missed?

trying to polish my heel guard or peg mount(which ever one you want to call it) to get the hang of polishing,i like to sand and do bodywork.I understand that the higer the grit the more scratches it removes or smoothes.I started with 150,220,320,500,1000,1500,then 2000. By 1500 things look clean and i start to notice the mirror like shine coming, but when i start to buff with the cutting compound everthing comes out white?what step did i miss?trying to polish foot peg mount:,.

I am polishing my foot pegs and they don't look like that at all. What bit are you using on the dremel? I've been using a combination of the soft polishing pads with red compound and wire polishing wheels. I find the wire brush does the best job to remove a lot of junk, I then go over it with some WD-40, give it a buff and clean everything off. Since the bike I am doing it on is 20yrs old, taking off the oxididated metal was actually easy. However, the polishing part will take some more time.

I'll go into this a bit more once I wake up

i did the sanding by hand.I did not have a problem getting the "shine" its just when i put the compound on the dremel (white small buffing pad) it takes all the shine away and looks dull, and white. i'll take a pic of the dremel and compound i was using. thanks for the help though.

I find the compound gave a dull finish as well.. So, I just ended up cleaning it and using an actual metal polish and doing it by hand.

I've had excellent luck with Mother's Billet Metal Polish. Works good with or without power tools.

i just did my front wheel.
80,180,300,800,1000,1500,2000
all wet sanded. except 80.

then i used Turtle wax rubbing compound. and then polishing compound. (used for paint on cars)

it came out BEUTYFULLL like a mirror.

all done by hand.... good luck.

also..... im not sure about the foot pegs and stuff being aluminum. they look like something else, i tried doing my pass pegs and they dont look like aluminum. i thing they are ss or something.
