Well, a person could use a master link w/ slide clip. but they're not nearly as reliable.

The tools that TK mentioned don't cost all that much.Ibought the cheapest ones I could findand they wore out after about 3-4 chain changes. Not all for mybike of course, helping out friends and their bikes. It all depends on how many times you plan on using it. Some friends and I all chipped in together and bought the MotionPro Jumbo combo tool (rivet and breaker). Changed the chains on 4 bikes so far.
