It's time for me to learn the basics of chain and sprocket technologies. if i can do it myself? what is involved? if i go down in teeth, what will that do?

basic replacing

The # of teeth has been discussed to death and is easily found with the search function

Do a search for details but if you go less teeth at the front or more at the back the bike will accelerate faster but your top speed will be less.

chain and sprocket is pretty easy to do, u will need a chain tool, a rear stand and basic tools, i went +2 in rear and -1 in front, i loved it, and you keep your top end, it's pretty easy to do yourself
