need advice on purchasing '02 CBR-954RR
it has a salvage title and it has not been repaired... its available for $5200.00 - the damage consists of the lower left fairing all scraped to hell and the left peg being torn off with a couple noticeable scars on the left of the tank that have oxidized and shows rust... only a tiny portion of the frame has been scraped and the story seems consistent with the damage shown.. the seller is adamant about the lightness of the damage and that it drives straight as an arrow...
the question i ask is this: why would a bike with such light damage be scrapped for a salvage title??? it only has approx 4500 miles on it and it is a fairly late production high end performance motorcycle so what gives??? i for one am a new rider and would like to start riding this upcoming season so i feel a bike like this would be a great deal at a great time... especially being that i do not mind riding a less than perfect ride.. any opinions on this dilema would be greatly appreciated... thx in advance fellas!
p.s. for all the current/previous owners of the 954RR what makes it the perfect fit for you above all the other rides like the 600RR, 929 etc etc??

Probably has salvage title because of a previous accident, not the one you mentioned about the scrapes on the sides. A lot of people will buy a salvage bike, rebuild it, then sell it off.. 5200 for an '02 with 4500 miles, salvage title, and damage sounds a little high priced. I would suggest if your going to pay 5200.00 for a bike, take a look around, you can get a really nice bike in good condition for that amount of money.
Also you asked the difference between the 600, and 900 series, it's all high end. You can get on them both take them for a spin around town and find a lot of similarities, but when you hit the back roads and crack the throttle, thats when you notice the difference. I have riden a 600 before, and it's a lot similar to my 954 untill I really crack it. Also I believe there is a little weight difference but not too much. Also if your in to stunting, as a lot of people are, I hear the 600 is the way to go, and if your into speed I would recommend the 929, 954 or 1000rr. Really it's all preference.

I've owned a lot of bikes but I would never buy a salvage title - there's just too many unknowns (and god forbid there might be frame damage). I don't know what you financial situation is but if you can afford another $1500 you can find a good clean 954 that's never been dropped. I had a 929 before and you can totally find a clean one for the same proce as this salvage title bike, it's a solid ride.
As for comparing a 600 to a litre bike, my good friend has a saying: "You can never go back in power." I ride friends 600's now and then and to be honest, I just don't like 'em anymore. Hope this helps.

That kind of price does sound a little skeptical! It most likely does have a salvaged title. In my opinion you don't want to buy a bike with a salvaged title cause you never know what can still be wrong with it. And not to mention if you ever decide to sell it, you may run into problems finding someone who wants it. Just shop around like the other guys said. There are plenty of nice bikes out there. For example, I'm trying to sell my 954. If you're interested hit me up!

I bought my 02 954 on eBay for $5500, and this thing is MINT. It had just a hair over 5K miles on it, a scorpion exhaust, sportech windscreen, and sliders. If you are patient and dilligent, you should be able to fund a much better deal (on a much nicer bike) than what you are describing.
