Default ChainSlack adjustment seems excessive?

The user manual for my 2003 Honda CBR 954rr recommends roughly 1 1/2 to almost 2 inches of chain slack. This seems like a lot. I am sure Honda knows what they are doing, but can anyone suggest why this bike should have such a large amount of chain slack? Thanks.

Because it get tighter as the rear suspension compresses.
