brake change
i have an 02 cbr and i am pretty sure that my brakes are starting to get kinda low because they are starting to make a squeaking noise when i apply them. anyways. i need to know what all i need to change. obviously brake pads, but what else should be a maintenance with brake pads. also when my bike is off and i am pushing it around it sounds like my front brakes are rubbing quite a bit. is there any way to adjust them so they don't rub on the brake disc?
no i haven't changed them yet. they have done it since i got the bike with 6k miles on it. its progressively getting worse so i figure its time for a brake change. i don't have a gauge for the pads and when i am riding and start slowing down and it gets quiet enough for me to hear it, i can hear kind of a squeaking noise. is it time for a change or how do i fix it
Is it a squeak? or is the sound more like a metal to metal grinding sound? You should be able to tell how low your brake pads are by looking at them. If you can't see any material between the metal backing plate, and the rotor time to change, or you'll damage the rotors, and have to replace them too. The brakes will always drag a little. You can tell when you put the front on a stand and spin the wheel by hand. If it's excessive the calipers/pistons are dragging, then you might need to overhaul the seals, or replace them. Sometimes the pistons will get a little corroded and not move freely causingthem todrag. I've cleaned them with a little emery cloth. If they're pitted from the corrosion you should replace them. If your rotors are warped you can also tell by pulsing felt under braking. As far as the type of pads go, IMO EBC HH are the best. Hope this helped.
Brake pads will always be rubbing to a certain extent. It's really only an issue if they are getting hot, without being used, and/or rubbing enough that you can't push the bike easily.
They are squeaking? Yeah, change them. The pads have a wear indicator, a cut away line. Perhaps you'd like to get the manual before changing the pads? and don't forget to flush and bleed the system.
