Default Gearing Question

I bought my 929 about a month ago. The guy I bought it from told me he did the 520 conversion with -1 front +2 rear 15/45gearing. I checked the chain and it was a 520 d.i.d. chain and the rear sprocket said 45 on it. Now just today I took the front sprocket cover off and the sprocket is a 16 tooth. So my question is should I go with a -1 ,15 front? I see every on here either goes -1 in the front with the stock 43 rear. Or they go-1,+2. I have never seen someone with 16/45 gearing like mine. How big difference will it beif I put a 15 front sprocket?

if you want the front end to come up even easier then go -1 +2 . going -1 in the front is same as +2 in the rear. it will take away your top end and make your speedo off. but it will also effect your engine braking and the way you perform in the twisties. i stayed with stock 16/43 and never had a problem with it loved the way it handled. some want to feel even faster so they gear it or so they can wheelie even easier. its up to you.

thankfully gearing isnt that expensive so you could get a stock setup to try it out with and if you didnt like it always change it out to -1+2

How would I tell what gearing I have? The guy I bought my bike from only had it for two months and he bought it geared, but he thought it was a smaller rear sprocket, but I'm sure its a larger one. Speedo reads higher than I'm actually going.

well you can either manually count the teeth or the # is imprinted on the sprocket. to get to the front sprocket you just have to unbolt the cover and either again count the teeth or read the #.

Thanks havoc for the reply. I definately don't want to go back to stock gearing, I like the
"pep it got now and don't want to take away from that. So I think I will try the 15 tooth front sprocket seeing as its cheap and easy to change. If its to wheelie happy I can always put the 16t back on.
One more question, if I put the 15t front on I know I'll have to tighten the chain. Can I tighten the chain with the rear wheel on the ground?? I don't have a rear stand yet.

and to 929rrider the number should be right on the socket, if not just count the teeth like havoc said.

Just took a look, turns out I got -1 +2. 15/45. No wonder it wheelies so easily.

my 929rr came with 15/50, top end sucked, it was buzzing on the highway, speedo was way off, and I couldn't get on it till 3 gear. Put 16/43 set up and I am happy, thinking about going to 16/40 or 17/40. This bike has so much power, it doesn't need to be geared, well that's at least my opinion.

I'm sure I'd be happy with the stock gearing. In fact, I wanted a bike that hadn't been messed with, but a good deal came up so I bought it. Its not bothering me much so no reason to change it back.
