exploding rotors
Hey, I am having some rotors made for a 2001 929 from a place I found online. They will make them to my own specs and guarantee their quality. They are made out of heat treated SUS410 carbon stainless steel and are waterjet cut to the exact specs.
I was wondering if anyone has had a rotor explode on them, or even just break. I am going to be testing the rotors on the 929, which is a stunt bike fully caged up and everything. I pland to really beat the hell out of them with 80 mph stoppies and stuff like that. I just want to know what I have to look forward to if these things decide to take a crap on me, so to speak.
I also plan to heat them up and throw them around HOT to see if they will break.
Kinda like my own safety inspection on the things. After that I might sell similar ones. This place makes rotors for off road and cruiser applications, and the rotors are wave type.
I just don't want to get hurt, so if anyone has experienced a catastrophic brake failure, please tell me what it felt like prior to the break, during and after (pain).
Thanks!

RE: exploding rotors
What you said makes sense as far as testing, but why throw them around hot? The rotors won't suffer that kind of shock or impact on the bike (other than in a crash). If they break under those conditions what will that tell you? It won't tell you much since any high carbon steel can (and will) fail under extreme temperature (cold or hot) and suffers an impact. Just my opinion, but I would stick to the extreme "in use" type conditions rather than extreme material abuse.

RE: exploding rotors
HI Assassin my mate had a broken rotor and he did'nt even notice granted he was'nt doing 80mph stoppies but he was riddin it fast and breaking hard every time he rode it and who knows how long it was broken for so i don't think any 2 rotors are going to break the same or feel the same when they do all the best man.Joe

RE: exploding rotors
Most likely if they take a crap then you'll just lose front braking ability. It seems doubtful that they would lock up your front wheel -- although I suppose it could happen. Personally, I wouldn't bother with the heat-em-up and toss 'em test Contact the company and see if they'll give you a copy of tests performed on their parts. You'll want destructive and non-destructive test results. But SUS410 carbon stainless steel is really good stuff so I wouldn't expect any problems.
Post up pics when you get them in.
