can I swap a 96 900rr motor in my 2001 frame?

 

No, with the 929/954 the motor acts a stress member its not just a motor in the frame its kind of part of it.

 

Drop the engine, get a used one with low miles and no damage, and part the old one out! I'm doing this as we speak on my 900rr- hopefully will offset the engine cost with a bit of wrenching and shipping- almost identical too- cases and crank are shot on mine..
