Default Am I being paranoid? Charging system

I have done a couple long trips (>1500 mi) with my 929 and have never had any problems with it. My friends 900rr had his stator go out while on one of these trips. His odometer was around 20,000 miles. I've also read on the forums that usually the stator or regulator on 929s seem to wear out right around 20K miles.

I have a couple more long trips coming up, and my bike is at 23,000. I do have a cell phone charger wired in, but not always on (on/off switch). The regulator can only pull 1A of current from the headlight circuit.

I'm starting to get nervous because I dont want to get stranded some place becuase of a regulator or stator failure.

My 3 questions:

1) Is it dumb of me to want to replace the stator / regulator as "preventitave maintenence"?

2) Are these parts eventually going to wear out no matter what?

3) How long has your stator / regulator lasted before needing replacement?

Not dumb wanting to do preventative maintenance and you KNOW for a FACT it will eventually FAIL. My STATOR went out around 17,000 miles. Matter of fact usually when your stator goes out it will mess up the regulator rectifier too... Not always, but usually it does.

Its an electrical part...as with a light bulb in your house..each one has a life of its own. Your stockone may last till your grandkids graduate or its could go tomorrow...same with a new one.

I'd pick up a spare - if you are doing huge miles pack it or install it now... keep the old one as an emergency spare.

If you want more charging power, or to get away from reg/rec problems consider installing a more modern unit like the Shindengen FH012AA

I've got a bunch of gear wired into my bike - and I'll be doing the mod at some point.
