Default 929 w/a 954 swap - issues

I have a 01 929 with a 954 swap in it. The other day I was riding and the battery went dead well come to find out the connector from the stator to the regulator melted away.. Now my question is I did some research on hondas parts site and see that both the regulator and stator are different part numbers per bike. My bike is still using the 929 harness should I buy a 929 reg and stator? or 954 reg and stator? or doesnt matter which?

Hey:

Was it near anything to get it hot, Honda regs seem to have an occasional heat problem. I would go with a electosport, ricks, or electrex r/r as they seem to have better warrantees and reps than OEM Honda r/rs .The electrical system on the 954 may have a higher output, as the 954 had Larger fuel injectors and radiator, re-mapped electronic fuel injection, and a more powerful ECU, a 954 stator is needed. If the connectors are the same and a harness is not needed then I would go with all 954 stuff as the bike was an upgrade to the 929. If a new harness is on the horizon I would check out whats different and go with a 954 one if it will work with the gauge kit you have at least then you can use all 954 electrics and make it easier to get the parts for it when needed. Oh and make sure you have a good fully charged battery as that can lead to r/r probs and stator demise.

954 stator is different. but it's different because of the way it bolts to the stator cover. it's not different as it relates to power output though, so the stator doesn't matter.

you can use a 929 or a 954 R/R. hell, you could use any bike's R/R because they all do essentially the same job.

Since your running a 929 harness, run the 929 r/r. That way it will plug straight in. The 929 regulator is a good one with huge cooling fins.
