What the honda mechanic told you is in the wrong direction. The blown rectifier will cause your stator coil to overcharge your battery and fry it. Therefore losing its ability to hold a charge. I can honestly say dude that if you are only getting a charge at 6000rpm (any charge) then your stator coil is definately dying. You said it yourself that it only used to start charging at 5000rpm but now its only charging at 6000rpm. Its needing a faster spin from the flywheel to get the same charge.

I checked my bike two days ago. At an idle of +-1200rmp it gives a charge of 13.6v under no load (no fan and lights) and about 12.6v with load (fan and lights). Then I start revving the baby slowly and she already gives me 14.8v full charge at 3000rpm and doesnt budge from 14.8v even if I take her all the way up to 9000rpm. If yours is giving you nothing at even 5000rpm as you say now dude, then your stator coil is shot and the mechanics are taking you for a ride dude and just want your money, plain and simple.

If you have another friend with a CBR900RR or any other Honda close to that model, then try taking your volt meter to him/her and check their charge reading, I can guarantee that they will have some reading already from 2000rpm or 3000rpm. Then you will know that your stator coil is definitely shot.

But now Duke has me thinking maybe I should re-consider.

Yes, it could be something as simple as the coil. I will have to find a friend who can really test/check it for me.

What a coincidence, but my co-worker today was trying to refer me to a friend who is not a certified tech, but does know how to fix motorcycles and who doesn't rip people off.

I'm not saying Honda will do that, but I think I'll talk to my friend again tomorrow and find out where his buddy is located and have him look at my bike.

So Duke, if it's the stator coil, can I just get that replaced and keep the original stator?

Is it cheap? Where can I get one? Installation is easy I imagine?

 

Not to mislead you MT, I think its your rectifier that need to be replaced. Hope your friend's friend is a good electrician too.
I don't think the coil for the alternator will be sold separately either.

Labor = $96


Rectifier was over-charging and killing my battery. Fortunately, the battery is still good and I just need a rectifier. Parts may take a while to arrive. It's been a week since i dropped the bike off at Honda and no callbacks.

They did let me know early on, when I ordered my new headlight that the part was on backorder. [&o][&o]
