Default Should I be nervous about a bike with an engine rebuild

I am getting ready to take a look at at '98 900rr this week. He is the third owner and states that the engine has 20k on it but only 5k since the rebuild. I know it is an older bike but should i be nervous. And then any thing I should look for on the bike that could be trouble. He seems semi honest but I alsol know not to trust what he says bc he obviously want to sell the bike. he is asking $2500. The headlight needs rewiring and the plastics are scratched which means it was down at some point, but he states that it was not stunted. Let me know guys you have been a great help so far

if the engine only had 20k miles on it and required a complete rebuild. i would not hesitate to say that it was stunted, or just dogged out in general. you can find a better bike, especially for 2500. be patient and keep shopping would be my advice.

I would keep looking. I got this one for $2000 last fall. The prices for the 900RR are falling. Especially if you don't trust him. far as rebuilds, I would rather buy a rebuilt one that has gone a few thousand miles. I get nervous when they say its got 50 miles on it since the rebuild..IMO only....

id run far and fast in the other direction. buying "he said, she said" stuff can leave you burned in the end. ive seen it happen to a couple people and heard it happened to a ton more. the only reason i bought my previously molested bike was because it was so cheap that if i had to buy another engine itd still be a good deal for the bike, then go figure i get tranny problems within 1000 miles of owning it. otherwise if your planning to spend decent money on something.....it should be completely stock and untouched

Yeah it is coming down to the point where I might ride my F2 this season and then go out and get a bike from a dealership with a warranty so i dont have to deal with the b.s of people trying to scam

All though I agree with everyone on here about buying a "rebuild" I can say that my 99 with 15K on the motor is going through a complete engine check. I am a home mechanic and I like keeping my toys in tip-top shape. I have the bike completely stripped down to motor and frame. Doing a deep cleaning, chain, sprockets, tires, oil, coolant, brakes, etc. Since Im here I figured why not drop the motor and check the valves, do a top down leak test, compression test, etc. Honda says every 16K to check the valves anyway so I might as well. Now I cannot atest to someone else's service job on their 900, but in my case the motor is strong as an OX! I just figured that it would be a good service to do all the checks (and any possible fixes) while Im there. Not everyone is a scammer and I have pictures, documentation, and reciepts to back up my work.

So, not everyone is out there trying to scam, some people REALLY do just love their motorcycle enough to make sure its at %100.

How many miles do you guys have on your bikes. Another 900 popped up but it has 40k on a rebuilt title, not as worried about the title because laying it down and busting up the fairings in Ohio could turn it into a rebuilt title. 99 CBR 900RR Its clean but I would definetly not give him what he is asking for. Its been up for a couple of weeks and just got reposted

36k on my bike..bought it wrecked and rebuilt it. It was abused and now I race it. besides the clutch basket rattle(common) it is as strong as ever. I push this thing to its limit and she keeps right on screaming.
