Root of reg/rec problem?
I know this has been gone over before but I was wondering if anyone had a real conclusive idea on what causes the Regulator Rectifier plug to overheat and melt pins or the plug body. I assumed it was corrosion on the connector pins and that led to higher amperage draw which leads to heat and the melting. I had this issue on my 95' but I checked all the electronics and wiring associated with charging system and everything checks out. One of the yellow wires running from the stator had melted part of the plug and there is slight damage on the Reg itself. Until I start the bike (1 week) I won't know for sure but I am hoping that this hot spot was indeed a result of corrosion and not some stator overcharge issue, although that seems unlikely given the fact it was only 1 yellow wire and not all three. Let me know if I'm on the right track or if there is something common going on here that I am missing. By the way I think issues like this are avoidable if you pack every electrical connector on the bike with dielectrical greese, which I have now done. Thanks in advance for any info on the issue.
