Default I'm back with another build - 98 900rr

It has been a while, but I'm back with another CBR (4th if my memory serves me).

My last build was a 929. https://cbrforum.com/forum/cbr-929rr...-929rr-140449/

Before that was a couple of F3 600s. I only see one of my build threads. https://cbrforum.com/forum/cbr-600f3...t-bike-119994/

At any rate, I sold the 929 (mistake) to pick up a cruiser. I then sold it to put carpet in my house. I've been without a bike since June and have been looking daily for the right project.

I stumbled upon this 1998 900rr with a clean title and 100 percent there. I immediately drove the two hours to see it to find engine issues. The guy wanted $500, but I ended up picking it up for $300 knowing the engine would need replaced or rebuilt. I'm o.k. with that.

This is what it looks like today.

The fairings are in good shape with no cracks, so that's a bonus.

My plan is to strip it down this weekend, take stock of what I have, and develop the plan to get me back riding in the Spring.

The rough plan is to rebuild or replace the engine, polish the frame and wheels, and paint the fairings.

Looking forward to seeing that bike turn into a runner! Welcome back.

Thanks.

I didn't work on the bike today. I chose to work on the Mustang instead. I did get a chance to diagnose the engine. I wanted to see if it was locked up, so I dropped it in 5th gear and gave it a roll. Well, I got it to rotate enough to drop the wrist pin out through the hole in the block. I think it's safe to say this block isn't salvageable.

I'll work on tearing the bike apart tomorrow in prep for the resurrection.

I'm going to pick up some JB Weld tomorrow and go to work.

The good news is I have the bike stripped down and ready for the work to begin.

The even better news is I found an engine for it for $400. I'm picking it up tomorrow. It will be difficult not putting it back in to get the bike running, but I will resist for a few weeks. All-in-all, it was a very good day.

Holy carnage....

Its a shame, there doesn't seem to be that bad of scoring on the other cylinder that I can see, and the valves and top combustion chamber on the other cylinder pictured look pretty good too for the age...

I'm not quite sure what let loose first - the connecting rod or the valves.

Hooray! The guy flaked on me and decided he didn't want to sell it.

So, if anyone knows where I can find a good 98/99 engine (or at least a rebuildable with head), I'd be eternally grateful.

I found, what I believe to be, a rebuildable core. It's a complete engine and doesn't have any holes, so that's a bonus.

The cylinder walls look to have some markings, so it'll have to go to the machine shop for honing or over bore.

I'll start cleaning it up and inspecting it as soon as possible. Let the fun begin. I might be weird, but this stuff gets me excited.

While I wait for my micrometer, hone and gaskets to arrive, I decided to start polishing.

Part 1 of a bazillion is almost finished.

There's not much to report. I got rid of the ugly yellow seat with a little dye.Name: 2016-01-05%2018.05.41_zpshwnnn3ba.jpg

I also began part number 2 of the pretty making.

On a good note. I sold my Mustang and can add a little more to the bike.
