Default ‘00 CBR900RR Headlights and gauge not working

Hey all. I’ve recently come across an issue with my 2000 CBR 900RR, Turned my bike on in the early morning to commute to work and my headlight wasn’t working as well as my gauge light. Indicator lights still worked as well as my neutral indicator.

After a couple power cycles during my ride everything turned back on business as usual.

The next day, no issues.

Following day, nothing worked again however quick flick of the high beams and everything turned on.

Next following day and I have absolutely nothing, tried power cycling, tried high beams.

One thing I’ve noticed is if I turn my indicator on and start the bike, the indicator light will faintly show while the starter is functioning (I didn’t try that too much as I didn’t want to screw my starter)

Bike runs pretty hot in the tropical weather we have (100-106C in traffic which I’ve read is pretty standard) so maybe the wiring is on its way out?

My indicators and break lights still work however everything else is a no go.

Usually wouldn’t really bother me all that much because I forget to turn my indicators off even when the lights do work and I don’t normally ride at night time. But just started a new job where it’s pitch black in the morning so my commute to work is a bit scary lol.

Any thoughts? If it is a wiring issue how much would a bike repair shop slug me to fix it?

Sounds like dirty connectors either in the left handlebar switch cluster or in the starter switch (ISTR that pressing the starter switch disconnects the headlight).

I'm going to try hitting the starter switch with some contact cleaner tomorrow see if that fixes it. Possibly some dirt or grime making the lights think the starter is still pressed, am hoping I don’t have to take the ferring off to see if there’s wiring damage, seems all the ones I’m having troubles with sit just under the right ferring near my knees.

Best of luck with it - let us know how it goes.

Gave contact cleaner a shot, no dice. Time to dissect the bike 🙄

Sounds like a intermittent ground failure.
