Bike makes noise something like detonation when starting from a dead stop of pulling hard from low revs. 97 900RR with 18K miles never been touched other than fluids and tires. Anyone experience this with bikes using carburetors?

Sounds like pinging. It is a clicking sound right? I have had that on my 97 for some time and here is how I fixed it: I pulled the needle jets out and placed a small washer on the jet, in effect raising it. They are very thin so as to not raise it much but enough to fatten it up. It has almost completely eliminated the ping. Having the mixture a little fat probably lessens the hp a little but it is a worthwhile tradeoff.
