Default clicking!

I've been reading up on a lot of information on this site and it sounds like you guys really know your 900rr's, so I was hoping if someone could help me out! I recently bought a '93 900rr with 10k miles on it, runs/looks perfect- no problems- until just the other day. Out of nowhere my bike began to make sharp, metallic clicking noises. It is completely random, not rhythmic, also happens with the engine off just coasting in neutral, pulling in the clutch and putting it in gear does not effect the clicking, sounds like it is coming from the rear end or maybe transmission? I changed the stock chain and sprockets thinking they might be bad but the clicking remains. The faster I coast it seems the more frequent I hear clicks. It may be something in the suspension as well, however bouncing up and down on the bike while coasting did not seem to effect the clicking either. Anyone have ANY ideas at all?! I'm out of ideas and I miss my bike- I wanna ride again!!! Someone please help!

Thank You!
-Chris

have another person help you pin-point the noise. maybe ride a bicycle next to you on a quiet street, and observing your rr. looking & listening for out of the ordinary things.

WOW...... I just had the same problem with a customers ride. It was a 94 rr with 14,000 original miles on it. The rear bearings were also original. As it turned out the rear bearings were hammered because someone didn't have the rear wheel aligned properly. Changed the bearings..... Bike is SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH.

I would chek the rear bearings. Put bike on swingarm stand in neutral and spin the rear wheel. If necessary start and put in first gear. May require some load to get the bearings to squeeeel. Just be sure to have a buddy with you incase she walks off the stand.

Hope this helps

I also had this problem but it was not the bearings..

I had just fitted a new rear sprocket and a clicking noise started when rolling along either in gear or not..

Turns out the custom sprocket was not the same size as the original..

Standard one fitted back on and sprocket sent back for replacement!

Yeah, bearings scare the crap out of me. My last CBR (89' 600f) after along and fast ride of the summer, that winter I pulled the bike apart just for the heck of it. I found the front bearing had been intermittently locking up spinning on the axle front and rear. This wasn't from my lack of service as I had just bought the bike 6 months earlier, However, I do claim blame for not proper giving the bike my own personal inspection of disposable parts (bearings, brakes, and such) after the purchase.
So now I'm very **** about it and lucky for me I have the tools and ability to do a somewhat annual dismantle checking those parts. My wife got a big laugh when she found my new to me 900 tore down to a frame and engine the night I bought it.
Yes it is somewhat excessive but had you seen the condition of those parts and the way my wild rebel young self was riding that year, yes I feel somewhat justified in going that far.
Beside when comes to getting an inspection sticker, around here they don't check crap that really matters to having a safe bike lights, brake, horn turn signals really.
Sorry to rant. Yes everyone check your bearings
