Changing The Oil
#12
I've always used the practice of the mfg. recommendations until the motor is broke-in. I change the oil at 100, first filter at 500, oil and fliter at 1000. and then every 3000. The best engine, tranny, and clutch success I have had is a '94 900 RR that I changed oil every 1,000 and filter every 2,000. Its has 80,000 without any internal repairs. I like Motul, but Mobil works great also. If you want the best, its Shell Advance. Good luck getting it in the US. All synthetics will leak past old school seals, "fiber". So most HD guys throw a fit. You can replace with, or upgrade to true rubber seals. I recommend buying a magnetic plug, it doesn't protect anything, but it might lead you to a problem. Other than that, color and smell of your used oil is key to long life.
Motorcycles are not like automobiles, they usually share oil with the tranny, which will destroy your oil in a hurry, especially if you share fluid with your clutch. Change fluid more than often and filters too.

Someone had previously said they use automobile synthetic, bad idea. It contains detergents; however, autos don't share motor oil and tranny oil or fluid, like a constant mesh sequential box on a bike does. If you want to clean house at your oil change, get your bike to operating temp, then pour some diesel in the oil. DO NOT put a load on the engine, but allow it to idle. The diesel thins the oil and sludge trapped inside.

new 1st time bike owner. I bought a 99 CBR 900rr. I know its a lot of bike for a beginner but. I am taking it slow. I typically do all the maint and my cars but was wondering about doing it on the bike. I need to change the oil and brake fluid as well as the coolant tank is or looks as if there is nothing in it. Would i be better off taking it to a shop? or trying this myself?
Another good general maintenance book is Sportbikes 101. Should be able to find it at amazon. I use it in conjunction with the shop manual...shop manual is a little dry on explaining certain things.
Got a photo of your bike?
