Dude you asked the wrong question, there have been wars fought over that question. As far as how much, 4 quarts should be fine. Put in the first 3 then add the 4th slowly till it gets to where it should be. As far as what type that's a whole other monster. I currently run Repsol 10w40 regular oil (non synthetic). I have a buddy that runs Rotella T (shell) from walmart. He and other racers swear by it. so personal preference it key. I currently run a K&N oil filter but anything other than Fram is good.

 

Thanks ... The kidd I bought the bike from ran fram filters so I was seening what people perfered ... so I will prob run K&N filter with Repsol 10W40 since I have to go to the bike store to get the filter and get a couple fasteners ... Thanks again.

 

Just my two cents, but I'd only use K&N and Mobil-1 oil filters.

I don't use Fram for whatever reason, just some people saying they have cardboard inside the filter itself.

Mobil 1 filters and K&N filters are recommended, especially by the Camaro owners. I used those only in my Camaro Z28. (V8, aluminum engine)

 

I can verify that the Fram filters are toxic, stay away from them they are cheap for a reason. I have cut a couple of them open, and the end of the filter element (which is usually made out of a piece of stamped steel in most filters) is made out of a piece of heavy paper kind of like a manila folder. One of the filters i cut open had the paper all warped and distorted, enough that there was a small gap which I'm sure was letting oil bypass the filter element. As far as oil goes, it is my personal preference to use only synthetics in my bike and my car, especially for the bike. The reason is because a motorcycle uses a wet clutch, which means it shares the oil with the engine. The clutch creates a lot of shear forces on the oil which causes it to break down and deteriorate and synthetics have a much higher tolerance to shear forces. Also motorcycles run a lot hotter (215 to 220 degrees versus 185 to 195 for most cars), and synthetics are much better at maintaining viscosity and holding up to higher temps, thats why manufacturers that sell a lot of turbocharged cars (Audi and VW, i'm looking at you) REQUIRE full synthetics to be used or the engine sludge warranty is voided becuase turbochargers expose the oil to very high operating temps. I also think synths lube better because the molocules are more uniform in shape and size. A good analogy is what rolls around easier between your hands, a bunch of ball bearings that are the same size, or a bunch of marbles that are all different sizes? Obviously the ball bearings, and the same goes for the oil in your bike.

i use honda filters.... a local shop carries them.....

as far as oil i use Mobile 1 racing 4T full synthetic..... and i run about 4.2 ish quarts so i dont starve it doing wheelies.....

 

Honda filter and castrol semi synth. So far so good.

new 1st time bike owner. I bought a 99 CBR 900rr. I know its a lot of bike for a beginner but. I am taking it slow. I typically do all the maint and my cars but was wondering about doing it on the bike. I need to change the oil and brake fluid as well as the coolant tank is or looks as if there is nothing in it. Would i be better off taking it to a shop? or trying this myself?

 

What does everyone think about full synthetics in bikes with higher miles?
Some of the shops around here have mentioned the synthetics being "too slick". What about Amsoil? Did I just start another war by asking that?
